The Mysterious ZeroByte.dll

Originally published in: red66.com

Trying to open a presentation with Powerpoint 2007 Beta under Windows Vista Beta 2 throws this mysterious error:

Bad Image | C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\XLATORS\ZEROBYTE.DLL is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error. Try installing the program again using the original installation media or contact your system administrator or the software vendor for support.

Googling for “zerobyte.dll” returns absolutely ZERO results, which is even more mysterious than this error message. Opening the same file using Powerpoint 2007 Beta under Windows XP Media Center result in no errors, and the file opens up fine.

ZEROBYTE.DLL is stored in the XLATORS folder on both machines and is exactly 0 bytes long.

If you know what this file does or what’s causing this error, please jump into the comments and let me know. Thanks.
